Understanding Student Credit Cards

Student credit cards are credit cards that are geared specifically toward college students and, in some cases, toward high school students as well. With these credit cards, college students can begin building a solid credit history that can be invaluable after graduation.

Without student credit cards, college students can have a difficult time obtaining a credit card. This is because college students generally have no credit history or they have a very limited credit history. This puts them within a high risk category that many credit card companies will not work with. Or, it makes the college student eligible only for credit cards with very high APRs.

Obviously, this scenario is not desirable. Therefore, many companies have created credit cards that are geared specifically toward college students. These credit cards usually do not have the same benefits that are associated with traditional credit cards, such as extended warranties, roadside assistance, and travel insurance. They do, however, offer reasonable rates when compared to other cards that are meant for individuals with limited credit history.

In order to apply for a student credit card, it is usually necessary to name the college or university the student is attending. In some cases, it may be necessary to send some sort of proof of attendance or even a transcript to prove responsibility. The troubles of applying, however, are well worth it in order to start building credit for the future.
